Saffron Walden’s men fell to defeat against Harleston Magpies in an 11-goal East Premier A thriller at the Joyce Frankland Academy on Saturday.

The match was brought forward from its original January 6 date and Walden took the lead on an early counter-attack.

Harleston hit back with a brace of high-quality goals, but Walden replied with a quickfire brace of their own to move 3-2 ahead.

Two clever deflections put Magpies back in front in a topsy-turvy encounter and they added a close-range fifth before the interval.

The visitors then made a bright start to the second half and scored two more goals, including a superb six-man move, to move 7-3 up.

Walden scored a fourth goal before the final whistle, but it proved to be little consolation and they go into the festive break in a mid-table position with 12 points from a dozen matches played to date. They host Chelmsford on January 13.
