Underpar Walden needed a dramatic late Kate Robinson goal to secure all three points and maintain their position as league leaders.

City put in an energetic display, pressing the defence and getting in early tackles, making it difficult for Walden to get into their usual fluid hockey.

There were warning signs for the visitors as City twice broke forward quickly and caught the defence short, but could not capitalise.

But it was City who opened the scoring. The goal came after Walden were slow to set up their press. City attacked down the right wing and it was an easy finish for the unmarked forward.

Walden’s response was immediate, as they scored in a similar fashion, Robinson easily rounding her defender, sprinting to the back line and crossing to Katherine Langridge to sweep in.

The second half was frustrating for Walden as they tightened up defensively and didn’t look like conceding again but could not convert chances up front.

With 40 seconds remaining Langridge and Robinson combined again, the former firing in a cross from the left for Robinson to deflect in.
