THREE clean sheets in a row have moved Walden out of the relegation zone as their post-Christmas fire continues to burn brightly.

A brace from forward Ashley Gale and a late goal from captain Andy Boyd – his first for a year – sealed a victory over Walden’s bitter rivals.

Boyd has been teased about his lack of goals up front but his contribution to the team this season has had a big impact.

On Saturday he set up the opening goal for strike partner Gale and has led his team well after a disappointing start to the season.

Manager Clive Newitt had told the Saffron Walden Reporter that his team’s league position was “slightly false” and, after bolstering his defensive options over the winter break, Walden have not looked back.

The visitors’ resurgence has been built on a rock-solid defence and that was evident from the start with a strong back line repelling any attacks.

Quick on the counter, they looked dangerous on the break and Gale scored before half time – a cool finish from a precise Boyd pass.

After the break, Boyd converted after rounding the keeper – his teammates celebrated wildly and surrounded him to show how much they value their skipper.

Late in the second half Gale rounded off a convincing victory with a neat flick over the sprawling Stortford keeper.

Three more points, three clean sheets in a row, and for the first time Saffron Walden move out of the relegation zone in the East Mens League 2S.

Next: Walden host Plashet at Newport Grammar School on Saturday. Push back 1.30pm.
