ATHLETES from Saffron Walden put in stunning performances at the European Championships in Spain – with Jack Peasgood finishing fourth in his age group.

Peasgood, alongside Nicki Davis and Dave Mather travelled out to Pontevedra to challenge themselves against the best on the continent in a gruelling 1,500m swim, 40km cycle and 10k run.

In blistering heat, despite a 420m climb in the cycling, Peasgood grabbed fourth in the 20 to 24 age group, making him the first British athlete to cross the line in 2hrs 6mins.

In her first European Championship, Davis finished eighth in the women’s 30 to 34 age group in a time of 2hr 37mins and Mather, competing in the 35 to 39 age group finished 32nd in 2hrs 22mins.

WaldenTRI chairman Derek Jones said: “We are delighted to have such a strong representation from the club and anticipate further success in the coming years as the current group of talented athletes fulfil their potential”.

WaldenTRI athletes will be competing in the World Duathlon Championships in Gijon, Spain in September and the World Championships in Beijing, China, also in September 2011

Straight back from Spain, Peasgood was also invited to compete in the British Triathlon Super Series race that was held in Canary Wharf alongside some of the world’s best elite tri-athlete’s in the world.

Despite a good swim he was unable to latch onto one of the packs of cyclists circulating the course which meant he finished down the field.

The race is due to be televised on Channel 4 on July 17 and 24.
