ALEX Goode hit a penalty as Saracens beat Newcastle 24-9 to close the gap at the top of the Aviva Premiership.

Starting at full-back Goode, who comes from Duxford, stepped up in the first half to extend his side’s lead to 11-3 at the break, putting the game beyond the visitors.

The win turned out to be something of a formality as 11 points came from the boot of Owen Farrell, who is the Sarries long-range kicker, and tries came from James Short and Jared Saunders.

Saracens now sit just three points behind leaders Leicester Tigers as the scramble for the premiership playoffs continue. They are 10 points ahead of third-placed Gloucester.

After the match, Saracens rugby director Mark McCall told the BBC that he was disappointed in the overall performance after his team had put more than 50 points past the same opposition earlier this season.

“We’ll need to address the way we played during the week before taking on Bath at home next Sunday,” he said.
