SAFFRON Walden County High School’s (SWCHS) senior boys under-16 and under-18 rugby squads enjoyed a mixture of cultural visits and rugby on a four-day tour of northern Italy.

The first rugby fixtures were under floodlights with both teams winning convincingly. The U16s beat Brescia-based Oltremella Rugby 106–10 while the U18s won 97–0 against Pordenone Rugby. Although the score lines were very one sided both games were played in an excellent spirit with some outstanding tackling from the Italians.

The following night’s games were against Grifoni Rugby, a team based just outside Treviso. The U16 and U18 squads mixed together for the fixture as the games were played in thirds. The outcome was a narrow 17–10 win for SWCHS.

Grifoni were far stronger opponents and the fullback was capped by Italy at U17 level, reflecting the intensity of their performance and skill level.

The weekend was then left for a cultural visit to Venice and a visit to Padova to watch Petrarca v Sale Sharks, and for the boys an opportunity to meet the Sale Sharks players after the game.

A school spokesman said: “Throughout the tour the boys were a joy to take away and were excellent ambassadors for the school.

“We would like to take out this opportunity to thank Saffron Insurance for their continued support to SWCHS rugby and Camwood for their recent sponsorship.”
