Saffron Walden RFC U13s played out a terrific 17-17 friendly draw at Upminster.

A try from Fraser Murray after three minutes surprised the hosts as he burst through the defence to score.

Upminster fought back well to score after 14 minutes, with the score remaining the same until half-time.

The first half was lit up by Walden’s outstanding scrum and excellent front row work from Ryan Curtis, John Cannon and Charlie Cansell. After the break Upminster had the slope advantage and scored early in the second half.

Walden settled quickly and again absorbed pressure with a number of try-saving tackles on their line.

The visitors fought back up in their half, with Max Godfrey scoring in the far corner, nimbly avoiding the Upminster defence.

Upminster replied again with another try to retake the lead but, with a few minutes remaining, Godfrey scored again after a brilliant passage of Walden play.

Alex Keys slotted the conversion for the draw.
