Saffron golf seniors drive for success

PUBLISHED: 13:09 15 September 2010

OVER 90 golfers from 33 clubs across the region gathered at Saffron Walden to participate in the annual Seniors Open competition.

Whilst the weather was dry, scoring proved difficult in testing, windy conditions. The course was in excellent shape, which is a testament to Ray Goodsall and his greenkeeping team.

The overall winner was Mike Price with an impressive Stableford score of 36 points. Leading the visitors was Pat Ridgewell from Upminster with 34 points.

Runner-up places went to David Boon from the host club with 34 points and Bev Taylor and Robert Smith both with 33.

There were three age groups prizes. The 55 to 64-year-gong went to Steve Plumb. Mike Rallison won the 65 to 70 group and John Short returned 31 points to secure the over 71 prize.

The longest drive competition was won by Terry Croker on the thirteenth hole for the visitors and by John Crawley for Walden.

Nearest to the flag prizes at all four par threes were awarded to J Staines, Pat Ridgewell, Rodney Palmer and Colin Brown.

Saffron Walden captain Nick Baker presented to prizes to the winners alongside ladies captain La Vern Frost.
