Saffron Walden celebrated their first win of the London One North season with a 41-22 triumph over Fullerians.

With an almost full squad to pick from and buoyed by their display at Ruislip, they hit the ground running in front of a big crowd.

The first try came after only seven minutes as Walden went through several phases and exploited an overlap for right wing Ollie Webber to go over in the corner and run behind the posts for Tom Price to convert.

The home side doubled their lead soon after as they regained possession and saw second row Matt Holden make a clean break deep into the Fullerians half, before offloading to centre Adam Miles to go under the posts.

A great spell of Walden play was capped on 19 minutes when the ball was moved across the field to fly-half Tom Hughes, who chipped ahead for left wing Paul Marshall to beat his opposite number and take the ball without breaking his stride, before sending centre Mark Kimberley cantering over the line for a 19-0 lead.

Fullerians hit back with two tries of their own before half time, going over from a catch and drive move at a lineout and then from a quick pass off a scrum to make it 19-12 at the break.

But Walden were quickly out of the blocks in the second half and converted a penalty when the visitors were caught offside to move 10 points clear.

Fullerians conceded several penalties close to their line and eventually had a man sin-binned, which allowed Webber to score his second try for Walden and flanker Ben Stapleton to also go over and make it 34-12 with 25 minutes remaining.

The visitors dug deep and, once back to full strength, managed to go over twice more in a 10-minute spell to clinch a bonus point and cut the gap to 12 with 10 minutes still to be played.

Valiant Walden defence kept them out after that, though, and the scoring was completed when man of the match Marshall intercepted a pass and used his pace to run the length of the field for a converted try with only a few minutes left.

Walden will hope to maintain their improved form when they return to league action at Amersham and Chiltern on Saturday week (October 21).
