Saffron Walden suffered an agonising final-ball defeat to Ramsey at Anglo American Playing Fields in Tucker Gardner Division One action on Saturday.

Walden won the toss and decided to bat first on a good batting wicket.

They made steady progress with John Hayes making 47 and Giles Ecclestone a solid 74.

Thereafter, the run-scoring slowed and Walden finished their innings on 221-7.

Walden began their bowling attack well with Ben Waring taking the first wicket in the sixth over although Ramsey’s captain Jordon Cafferkey held on to make 50.

Ramsey continued their solid batting performance until the 29th over when they lost a couple of quick wickets and were put on the back foot by Walden.

However, Ramsey’s tail-end batsmen Jon Cade and Mark Edwards held on and edged the score closer to Walden’s total.

In an exciting finish Ramsey needed seven off the last over which turned into four off the last ball.

Ramsey’s Cade went all out and hit an incredible six to win the match.

Walden travel to Eaton Socon on Saturday.

The 2nds had better luck in their league encounter at March Town.

Having made 162 all out, with Spencer Hill top-scoring with 38, the hosts could only respond by posting 146 all out as Walden won by 16 runs.
