Having won the Jean Wilkinson County Trophy last year, Saffron Walden Golf Club’s ladies got off to a great start this season by prevailing in their opening group-stage match against Newmarket 12-2.

The two opening matches pressed home their advantage, with both Lynda Minton and Kiyoko McLellan winning four-up with three to go.

Sue Gunter and Sue Ward won by even greater margins, six-up with five to go.

Others had to fight to the bitter end with Carol Jones winning by one hole and Betty Williams earning a draw.

Barbara Nicoll found herself three-down before fighting back to all square, only to drop three holes for a second time.

However, she battled back once more to secure a well-earned share of the spoils.
