Saffron Walden ladies lose out in Jean Wilkinson Trophy semi-finals at the hand sof St Ives

SAFFRON Walden Golf Club’s ladies team competed well but were narrowly defeated by St Ives 4-3 in the Cambs & Hunts Jean Wilkinson Trophy semi-finals on Thursday.

In difficult, blustery conditions at Heydon Grange Golf Clu,b Sangdao Jackson in the lead match finished the 18th hole all square, having never been behind, and having halved 12. Unfortunately she lost the first extra hole.

Walden hopes were raised when Elaine Purcell won 4-up with two to play, and Jean Black also won, 7-up with six to play, having played 3-under handicap for the first nine holes.

Helen Porter and Jaine Fieldhouse then lost their matches, but Viv Dondi in the penultimate match, had an excellent 4-2 win.

The honours were even with one match to go but Sue Funston lost on the 17th green.

St Ives ran out victors in the finals in the afternoon, defeating Abbotsley 4-3 to lift the trophy.
