Saffron Walden: Married couple take trail race in their stride

Husband and wife Saffron Striders Nick and Rebecca White each had something to celebrate after tackling the off road Third Crusade trail race near Dunmow.

Nick took second place in the 7.5 mile race in a time of 1hr 5mins 41secs after navigating his way around the course following a written set of instructions.

Rebecca and running partner Carole Anastasi took the prize for the first females to finish among the 65-strong field of runners, and were fifth overall in 1hr 9mins 47secs.

Carol White was next home for the Striders, finishing in 1hr 24mins 17secs for 20th place while just three seconds behind was Eleanor Long for 21st place and Gavin Long in 1hr 25mins 12secs for 23rd.

The National Trust’s Grasmere Gallop event saw Fiona Halls once again in medal winning form as she took the prize for second female over 40 in the 17K race. Her finishing time of 1hr 24mins 57secs gave her 24th place overall in a field of 164 runners.

Neil Halls took on the 10K version of the race, coming 52nd out of 260 in 55mins 9secs.

Meanwhile, Barry Taylor came an excellent 27th out of 609 finishers at the zoologically-themed ZSL Whipsnade 10K, completing the course in 43mins 24secs.
