FINALS day at a Saffron Walden tennis club saw some hotly-contested matches as new champions were crowned.

The Grove held the annual event amid some pretty dreary weather and there was some excellent tennis played, notably amongst the younger players – the standard was described by publicity officer John Evans as “superb” which, he said, “bodes well for the future of the club”.

In the men’s singles final Ollie Toms beat Calum Tremayne 7-5 7-6.

But Tremayne, playing alongside James Kenyone, got revenge in the men’s doubles, beating Toms and his father Peter in three sets 6-4 4-6 6-3.

In the ladies singles final Julia Westnedge just got the upper hand over Rebecca Doe, winning 7-5 2-6 6-3. Doe and Charlotte Harrington beat Sally Harris and Sue Griffth 7-5 7-5 in the ladies doubles final.

In the shield matches, the men’s singles final was won by Stewart Mackeonis over Paul Kent 7-5 6-4, and the men’s doubles final was won by Adrian Brown and Kent against Simon Howell and Simon McInnes.

The ladies final was an epic match that went all the way, Sue Griffith eventually winning through over Doe 1-6 6-3 8-6.

The mixed doubles shield was won by Lee Jones and Charlotte Harrington who beat Simon Beckwith and Val Forbes 4-6 6-1 6-1.
