Saffron Walden Town bounced back from their big defeat against Billericay Town to east past Ilford on Saturday.

Beaten 8-1 by the National League South high-flyers in the Essex Senior Cup in midweek, the Bloods needed only eight minutes to make the breakthorugh as Tom Lakin netted.

Lewis Francis doubled the home side’s advantage from the penalty spot on 32 minutes, with Marcus Crowther adding a third before the interval on his way to the man of the match award.

Dan Trendall made it 4-0 just five minutes into the second half, but the Foxes replied moments later.

It was only a consolation for the visitors, though, as Trendall completed Walden’s nap hand with a stunning strike seven minutes from time.

The win leaves the Bloods in fourth place, but just two points behind leaders Stansted, who visit Catons Lane next Saturday (December 15).

Manager Jason Maher tweeted: “Must ask all @SWTFootballClub fans to turn out in numbers for next weeks big game against @FCStansted and what will also be a very special occasion with @SpikeBell7 making his 400th appearance for the club. Very special achievement for someone to achieve. #bloods #loyalty.”
