Bloods secure promotion with vital point

Saffron Walden Town will be playing their football in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division next season after gaining the all-important point needed against Great Yarmouth Town to secure promotion.

The Bloods went into the game needing a result to clinch third place in the First Division, while Yarmouth, after dropping five points in their two previous games, had to win.

Walden got the goal they needed when Shaun Avis poked home Jamie Solkhon’s header. However, the Bloods’ season has been anything but straight forward and Saturday was no different.

James Crane was sent off for an off-the-ball incident, leaving Walden to play almost 30 minutes with 10 men. Yarmouth duly equalised to set up a nervous finish for the 762 fans packed into Catons Lane.

Brave defending, most notably from Solkhon, who took a boot to the face for his troubles, a challenge with resulted in a red card for Yarmouth, saw out the task as Walden secured promotion.
