Local football round up
Therfeld & Kelshall 1 Saffron Crocus 1
Saffron Crocus could only take a point in their penultimate away fixture. Despite dominating long periods of the game with high tempo possession and creating a number of chances a winner could not be found.
The visitors looked lively from the off, with Scott Cummings looking keen to add to his 21 goals and testing the home defence goalkeeper. He then turned provider with a pinpoint cross finished by Darrell Phillips.
Crocus had the momentum and continued to take the game to Therfeld but were unable to extend thier advantage.
This proved costly in the second half when a defensive mix-up allowed a Therfeld striker through, and though Joe Hanley’s tackle looked fair the referee disagreed and awarded a penalty kick, that was duly dispatched.
Despite immense pressure from the visitors they were unable to add to the score.
Crocus finish their season with two games against Bar Hill Saturday Reserves, with the winner over the two fixtures winning promotion.
Bottisham & Lode 2 Saffron Dynamos 4
Saffron Dynamos finished off the 2013/14 season with a win at Bottisham & Lode on Saturday. A goal from captain Ryan Barry on 19 minutes got the ball rolling, before the home side equalised 10 minutes later.
Dynamos eventually regained the lead with a goal from Ben Start just before the interval. The home side again equalised midway through the second half before a great strike from Start on 70 minutes restored the Dynamos lead.
Substitute Milton Mendes grabbed the fourth on 77 minutes to wrap up the points.
Abacus 3 Westbury Boca 1
Abacus took on Westbury Boca in their second cup final of the season.
On a poor playing surface Abacus started off a little shaky and it took them a while to get used to the long grass.
The backline of Peter Flack, Richie Salmon and Steve Woods were solid, making essential blocks in the early part of the game.
Abacus got their momentum going and some intricate passing earned them a corner. Charlie Norris swung the ball in, the Boca keep was left flapping as the ball fell to Neil Brown who cooly converted.
Abacus started the second half a lot stronger and more determined. They dominated the possession with good link up work across the field. Sean Stock fed a ball to Norris down the line who took it round two defenders before sneaking the ball into the bottom corner.
Abacus rounded off their scoring with another goal from Norris supplied by Steve Leys. With a three goal cushion Abacus stepped off the gas and Boca got a consolation goal.
Abacus are through to another final which will be played at Bishop’s Stortford FC’s Woodside Park on May 7.
Whittlesford 6 Linton 1
Whittlesford put six past rivals Linton on Saturday, with goals from Max Annets, Eddie Gallagher, Harry Bright, Tom Ranns and James Reeves.
