‘No reason to panic,’ says Saffron Walden Town boss after two losses

Saffron Walden Town manager Stuart Wardley says there is no reason to panic after the Bloods lost their opening two games of the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division season.
Town lost 2-0 at defending champions Norwich United on Saturday and, on Tuesday, Newmarket Town handed them their second straight loss to the same scoreline.
Despite having no points from six on offer, Wardley was not worried about his promoted side.
“I haven’t been too displeased at all,” he said. “We’ve put in some good performances but, at the moment, we’re being punished for little mistakes.
“That’s the difference between the leagues. Last year we got away with mistakes and now we’re being punished for them.
“There’s no need to panic.”
Walden have a week off from league action to compete in the FA Cup - see inside for a preview - before returning to it with a game at seventh-placed Mildenhall Town on Tuesday, August 18.
The schedule doesn’t get any easier after that, with a trip to high-flying Felixstowe and Walton United four days later, but the manager insisted it’s ‘just a matter of time’ before the wins start mounting up.
“We’re playing well enough, it is just silly things that are costing us. We’re creating chances but lacking that last bit of cutting edge,” he said.
“Hopefully that’ll come; we’re not too far from it. We just need one win to kick-start the season and I’m sure more will follow.
“We have to be more clinical but all in all, I’m not displeased with what I’ve seen.”
Losing isn’t something the Walden squad is accustomed to having tasted defeat just four times in the league last season.
Wardley, however, says the team is still going into every game full of confidence.
“We’ve had two losses but we’re still confident we can get a result in any game and, starting this Saturday, get into the next round of the cup,” he said.
