James Thomas’ first half effort was enough for Saffron Walden Town to beat Halstead Town 1-0 in the Thurlow Nunn League Cup first round on Tuesday night.
Premier Division Walden produced a good performance to beat the First Division pacemakers,
In the first 20 minutes the Bloods played some of their best football of the season and could have scored several times.
However, it took until the 14th minute for the inevitable breakthrough when Craig Calver squared to Thomas to side-foot into the net from a few yards out.
Five minutes later Thomas returned the favour for Calver, but he shot over.
The second half started with Walden having a goal disallowed.
From Louis Harper’s inswinging cross, the keeper could only palm the ball into the net as he fell backwards.
Nobody touched the stopper, but the referee harshly disallowed the effort.
Walden’s Louis Harper, Mark Abbot, Thomas and Calver all went close to a second goal, but it never came.
In the closing stages Jamie Solkhon had a header from a corner stopped on the goal line, and a late header from Ryan Fleming was cleared from near the post.
The solitary goal proved to be enough though as Walden triumphed.
