Walden Ladies are through to the Essex FA Trophy final.

Walden Ladies booked an Essex FA Trophy final date with Eastern Avenue after demolishing Wickford 5-1 in their last four clash.

Wickford were the first to make a breakthrough when, from a corner, they capitalised on poor defending and Kim Davies scored from close range. The goal gave the visitors the confidence to push forward and for 25 minutes they outplayed Walden and could have gone further ahead but were denied by both poor finishing and some fine goalkeeping by Chrissie Glover.

Fortune, however, was with the home team and a needless handball in the Wickford penalty area by defender Jane Griffiths allowed Kayleigh Nolan to draw level with a calmly taken spot kick. This was soon followed by Walden gaining the lead after Nina Dye bravely followed in a loose ball after a Nolan free-kick had been parried out by the Wickford ‘keeper.

The second half saw Walden take control of the game and it was no surprise when Pav Beasley scored. Clair Andrews drove into Wickford’s penalty area, found Nina Dye and she who unselfishly pulled the ball back to Beasley who struck home from 12 yards.

Walden’s lead was increased when Nolan scored her second and Wickford’s fate was sealed in the 88th minute when Kate Ellis netted her first goal for the club.

The final, to be played at Catons Lane on April 12, will be Walden Ladies’ first cup final appearance for 16 years. Kick-off is scheduled for 3pm.
