WHITTLESFORD manager Toby Dawson blamed fitness as one of the main factors as his side threw away a one-nil advantage in spectacular fashion.

Cruising into the break with a slender lead courtesy of Mark Johnston’s outside-of-the-boot finish on 25 minutes the home fans were stunned by a woeful second half performance from the home side.

Two goals in quick succession midway through the second half snatched three points for a Cottenham side who never gave up – but over the 90 minutes there was no denying that Whittlesford should have won.

Chances for forward pair Martin Turner and Matt Glass should have put the home side out of site before half time but as soon as Cottenham struck back there was only one winner.

In the end Whittlesford only had midfielder Nicky Barker to thank after he carried his side in the second period.

Dawson said: “I don’t know what happened, but fitness has to be a part of it – the lads need to train more on a Tuesday night if they want to get anywhere.”

Next: United travel to Fulbourn Institute on Saturday. Kick off 3pm.
