Walden crash out of FA Cup

Juan Cifuentes’ extra-time strike fired Welwyn Garden City into first qualifying round of the FA Cup and sent Saffron Walden Town crashing out of the competition.

After 210 minutes of football, nothing separated the teams until Cifuentes popped up with his first goal for the Citizens to wrap up a 1-0 win for 10-man Welwyn.

After Saturday’s goalless draw set up last night’s replay, Matt Snelling found the net twice in the first half only for the assistant to flag both for offside.

After more missed chances, the Bloods chance to progress was bolstered when Welwyn’s Yasin Boodhoo was sent off in the 63rd minute for a heavy challenge on Craig Calver.

Walden pushed forward relentlessly until the 90th minute but the hosts remained organised at the back, and managed to take the game into extra-time.

In the seventh minute of extra-time, from a position of no danger, a clearance from Ross Laird struck the referee and rebounded straight to Cifuentes who swiftly turned and shot first time into the top far corner of the goal from 20 yards out, giving Floyd Croll no chance to save.

The unexpected, and fortunate goal gave Welwyn something to defend, and, despite some intense pressure from the Bloods, they put their bodies on the line and held on for the win.
