SAFFRON Walden came close to spoiling the promotion party at Emerald Park for the last league game of the season on Saturday by almost beating the champions.

The Bloods took an early lead as Graeme Turner latched on to a pull back from Mitchell Das and swept home after a superb passing move.

But undeterred, and chasing their soon to be secured title, Gorleston hit back. Ali McKenna pounced after the ball deflected off the unfortunate Michael Barker.

The result sees the hosts climb the ladder to the Ridgeons Premier League but the game was a reminder of Walden’s own promotion potential for next season.

In front of a near 200-strong crowd they dominated for the majority of the match and chances fell to Spike Bell, Tommy Butchart, Brad Green and Joe Murphy but they could not find a second to finish off the hosts.

As the second half progressed the champions slowly came back into the match and found their equaliser with 25 minutes remaining.

At 1-1 the Das created two chances for himself but he was denied what would have been a winner by some excellent goalkeeping.

A draw away to the league champions was a good result, and Walden remained unbeaten in their last seven games during April to secure a sixth-place spot.
