Saffron Walden produced their best performance of the season to record a stunning 5-0 away victory to Great Yarmouth Town at the Wellesley on Tuesday night, against a team who had the best home record in the division.

Right from the kick-off the Bloods took the game to the home team, and never gave them a second on the ball, as they created a host of chances in the first 20 minutes. It came as no surprise when Walden took the lead in the 27th minute, when Craig Calver crossed the ball dangerously into the penalty area, and the ball found its way through to Matt Snelling, who smashed the ball into the net from 12 yards out.

Jamie Solkhon went close with two headers in quick succession, the first was saved, and the rebound went just wide of the post. In the 40th minute, following a nice Walden move, James Crane received the ball outside the penalty area, and after side stepping a couple of defenders, he unleashed un unstoppable shot that flew into the top corner of the goal to make it 2-0.

A minute before the interval Calver was brought down 30 yards out from goal, and with a piece of quick thinking he split the Yarmouth defence with a through ball to Snelling, who unselfishly squared the ball away from the keeper, and into the path of Shaun Avis, who scored from 10 yards into an empty net.

In added time of the first half, a free kick from Scott Woodcock hit the top of the Walden crossbar, to remind Walden that the game was still not yet won, with 45 minutes remaining.

Ten minutes into the second half, Snelling was fouled heavily on the left wing, and Stuart Wardley’s curling free kick, went over the Yarmouth defence, and Avis AVIS was on hand to score after leaping forward feet first and steering the ball past the home keeper, for a fine goal.

The Bloods kept up the pressure, and from another free kick on the right in the 62nd minute, Spike Bell’s cross was superbly headed past the keeper by Wardley from about eight yards out, to make it 5-0. Effectively it was game over.

Yarmouth at last started to create some chances, with some regularity, although their shooting was hurried, and fortunately for Walden, off-target. In the 84th minute Chris Reid made an outrageous attempt to score from about 60 yards out, when his long range free kick was tipped onto the crossbar by Danny Cable falling backwards in the Yarmouth goal, and away for a corner.

The Bloods held on to keep a clean sheet, and if they can repeat their recent form in their last seven league matches, mission impossible might just become reality.
