JOHN VIRGO was famous for the phrase “pot as many balls as you can,” well pool players in Saffron Walden have taken his mantra one step further, by putting a time limit on it.

Competitors at the Saffron Snooker Club and Bar speed pool event went head to head on Halloween and one cue master triumphed over the rest.

Mike ‘Spoons’ Spackman clocked a time of 58.6 seconds as he dashed around the table potting all the balls with the black 8-ball going down last.

Organiser Mark Cooper said: “Well done to Mike, the first winner of the ‘Old Speckled Hen’ Speed Pool challenge with an outstanding winning time.

The event ran from September 1 to October 31 and after its success more players will be added for the next challenge which has already started.

Mr Spackman added: “There are some excellent times going up on the score board already and the event will finish on the January 1, 2011, with the proud winner taking home a case of Old Speckled Hen.

“The club would like to thank everyone for taking part and look forward to the next successful challenge”.
