A SCHOOLGIRL has had her first taste of international competition and did not disappoint by beating the top seed in the opening round.

Alex Jones, aged 14, from the Grove Tennis Club in Saffron Walden competed in her first AEGON Junior International tournament this month in Birmingham.

She got through a tough qualifying round by beating the number one seed in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. The first round of the main draw saw her beat a very tricky opponent from the UK in straights sets 6-1, 7-5.

In the second round Alex was up against the ninth seed from Romania, a close match that saw Alex lose the first set, only to come back strongly and out power the Romanian in the third set, to take the match 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Into the last 16 and Alex met another UK opponent ranked 28 nationally in the U14s. Despite a good fight back, after losing the first set 6-0, she lost the match 0-6, 6-3, 5-7.

She said: “I enjoyed the experience of my first international tournament and it has made me even more determined to improve my game and achieve better results in the future.

“I would like to thank Saffron Walden County High teachers for all the messages of support I received throughout the week and for letting me have the time off school.”
