THREE Walden-based runners put in strong performances at the weekend, with one of them also gaining a call up to the Cambridgeshire County team.

On Saturday, at the Essex Cross Country Championships in Southend, Friends School pupil Hannah Irwin managed to conquer the steep hills and sticky mud to gain 20th place in a field of strong competitors.

Later, in the ladies race, WaldenTri’s Louise Rolfe completed her first-ever major championship run with a finishing position of 26 out of over 100 others.

However, the following day 15-year-old Cameron Watson stole the show by coming fourth in the Cambridgeshire County Championships at Priory Park, St Neots.

Cameron is a member of WaldenTri Juniors and is coached by Clare Thompson He his 4.3K race strongly throughout, and his fast finish ensured that he held on to his place as chasing runners tried to close him down.

This brilliant show clinched Cameron a place in the Cambridgeshire County team to take part in the Inter County Championships at Birmingham in March, an outstanding achievement for this young athlete.
