MATT GLASS topped the Cambridge County scoring charts with a match-winning hat trick on Saturday as United crept up to eighth in the Kershaw Premier league.

With boss Peter Carter away, joint manager Toby Dawson took sole charge and also took up position in attack replacing second-top scorer Martin Turner who was suspended.

Glass is on a white hot goal streak. Having only signed from rivals Fulbourn in October, he has propelled United forward with an amazing 11 goals in eight appearances. Right now he is the hottest striker in the league and United will do well to keep hold of him for next season.

One way to keep a player of Glass’s class is to win, and the home side did just that on Saturday.

A long winter break caused by frozen and waterlogged pitches meant that both teams started sluggishly but as chances started to come United looked the most likely to score.

The first goal arrived when Dawson had a fierce shot saved. He then pounced on the rebound and squared to Glass for an easy tap in.

The visitors levelled things up soon after with a set play that the home side failed to clear.

However, Glass restored the lead before half time with a typical burst through the middle before dispatching low into the net with the oppositions still looking for an offside flag.

The second half saw Waterbeach try and sneak back into the tie but the hosts killed the game off when Dawson again provided a neat ball over the top for Glass to race clear and finish with confidence.
