Saffron Walden’s Lewis Buchallet and Luca McGrath were celebrating after winning the National Cross-Country Relays title at Mansfield.

Two weeks after being crowned National under-13 champions at the National Road Relays, the pair joined Cambridge & Coleridge team-mate Isaac Morris for the three-stage event at Berry Hill Park.

Having led from start to finish at the South of England and National Road Relays, this event was always set to be very difficult due to the shorter 3x2k distances.

Morris led off and, despite losing a shoe in the mass start, battled to stay in touch and hand over in third place.

Buchallet had the unusual position of not leading but ran strongly to hand over in fourth, still up with the leaders.

And McGrath went off hard and fast, took the lead halfway around the course and held on for the win and first-ever gold medal for their club since the first event in 1985.
