A HIGHLY-REGARDED junior athletics coach has landed a national award for his work with a Saffron Walden triathlon club.
Geoff Jones, head coach of WaldenJNR, the junior section of WaldenTRI, scooped the British Triathlon National Children’s Coach of the Year Awards at a glittering ceremony in Leicester.
Geoff, a successful triathlete himself, was given the gong by 2012 Olympic hopeful Helen Jenkins. “I am surprised and delighted to receive this national accolade,” he said.
“It is a great honour and is a credit to the total commitment of our junior triathletes, the coaching team of ten volunteers and the support of the parents who have all put in so much time and effort.
“This has allowed the club to grow the membership to more than 80 children since the club was launched just over a year ago.
“I think it was this unprecedented growth for a junior triathlon club that impressed the judges so much. In addition, the support we have received from The Friend’s School and the School Sports Partnership has been a significant factor in our success.”
In September Geoff had already received the Children’s Coach of the Year for the Eastern Region which meant his name went forward to the national finals.
Last Saturday, 16-year-old club member Tom Blower presented that award to Geoff, after a weekly training session at the Friends School.
14-year-old club member Megan McLean said “Geoff is a brilliant coach who always gets everyone involved.
“He always has a good point about anyone, no matter how badly they think they have done. He makes time to meet individual needs and you would not think that he has a day job due to the amount of time and effort he puts into the club.
“He and Derek Jones are the driving force behind the junior section and this award reflects the time, effort and work they have put into the club to make it as friendly, fun and fabulous as it is today.”
WaldenJNR offers coaching and competition for children between the ages of 7 and 16.
It meets every Saturday at The Friend’s School in Saffron Walden between 8.30am and 10.30am.
