Walden Velo sextet qualify for UCI Gran Fondo World Championships

Six Walden Velo members have qualified for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in Perth, Australia.
With 8,000 cyclists taking to the Tour of Cambridgeshire’s 84-mile closed-road event across a number of different age categories, the top 25 per cent riders in each event were guaranteeed a spot on the plane for the event which runs from September 1-4.
Of Walden Velo’s 35-strong contingent, John Calvert Stephan Davis, Adam Young, Andy Hutchinson, Emma Nicholson and Paul Whiffen all battled to qualification.
Calvert in particular had a great event, managing 12th fastest in the 60-64 years male category in a time of three hours 44 minutes and 28 seconds.
His time was 675th out of over 5,000 riders who completed the full race distance.
Davis, Young and Hutchinson were three minutes behind Calvert, but still qualified in their respective categories.
Nicholson qualified for the ladies’ 19-34 year category in a time of 4:13.
That continues the run of impressive results by the Walden Velo ladies riders this year which the club is incredibly proud of.
The six qualifiers put in a sterling performance, averaging speeds of over 22mph, non-stop for just under four hours.
