Stuart Wardley says Saffron Walden Town are looking to grab a victory from their home Thurlow Nunn Premier Division clash with Walsham-le-Willows on Saturday to dedicate to fallen striker Charlie Portway.

The forward, who had bagged eight goals in his last nine games for the Bloods, suffered a broken scapula (shoulder blade) during last Saturday’s trip to Thetford Town which caused the game to be abandoned on the hour mark.

The hosts were leading 3-1 at the time despite Richard Chadwick’s opener.

Onlookers, including player-manager Wardley, believed that Portway may have broken his neck during the incident because of his horrible landing but after being rushed to hospital the damage was thankfully diagnosed as less severe.

Wardley told the Reporter: “It was horrible to see as he was in so much pain.

“Our physio was on holiday, bless him, but Thetford’s physio Chelsie Victoria, and the rest of their staff, were amazing the way they reacted.

“It’s such a shame because he was really enjoying his football and banging in the goals.

“All the boys have sent their regards to Charlie and now they want to get a win for him on Saturday.”

He added; “We’re glad it [the injury] should be healed in eight weeks.

“I’d imagine he’ll miss the rest of the season though once he’s got himself back to full fitness.”

The Walsham contest at Catons Lane kicks off at 3pm.
