Essex and England’s Tom Westley accepted a late invitation to play for Arkesden CC in their local derby with Clavering.

Unbeaten Arkesden were looking for a first-ever win over their arch rivals and relaxed residency rules to include Westley and Lord Richard Dannatt.

Clavering got off to their usual fast start bringing up the hundred in quick time, but wily Westley claimed six wickets with his off spin as the crowd grew and they were dismissed for 206.

In reply, Lord Dannatt got proceedings off to a brisk start and Dom Crabb held things together nicely.

Westley came in at number seven to calm the nervous Arkesden support with a controlled innings, getting to within five runs of the target before running himself out.

Clavering resident turncoat Paul Birch saw the Pheasants home and a spokesman said: “Tom Westley earned his Arkesden cap and if we are short again next year we’ll consider inviting him back.”
