Sir Paul McCartney’s Liverpool Oratorio, written with composer Carl Davies 25 years ago to mark the 150th anniversary of the Liverpool Philharmonic in 1991, will be performed at Saffron Hall by 75 singers and musicians from Saffron Walden, Cambridge and Paris.

The performance, co-ordinated by Cambridgeshire musician Peter Britton, will be performed on Saturday, July 9.

It is an epic work for chorus, a children’s choir, five soloists, an organ and orchestra. This performance follows two June performances in Paris seen by over 1,000 people, including an evening in the church of La Madeleine, Paris, led by Sabine Aubert, conductor of the Odyssée Symphonique orchestra.

Peter Britton said: “Music enables us to forge deep friendships. It will also give an opportunity to remember the victims of both the Hillsborough disaster and the recent Paris attacks. This is a chance to hear a rarely performed work by one of Liverpool’s greatest sons.”

McCartney’s text draws on events in his early life in Liverpool, through the central character Shanty. It includes his infancy during the Blitz, schooldays, then adulthood with its challenges and crises.
