UTTLESFORDE Orchestra opens its 2010-11 season of concerts on Saturday October 23 with a performance of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony and Wagner’s song cycle Wesendonk-Lieder.

The soloist in Wagner’s song cycle will be Yvonne Howard, one of Britain’s most outstanding mezzo-sopranos, well-known for her operatic roles. Yvonne has been hailed by the press as ‘one of the finest singing actresses this country has produced’. She has very recently played a leading role in the highly acclaimed production of the Turn of the Screw by Opera North.

Orchestra chairman Andrew Tusa said: “We are delighted to have Yvonne singing with us once more following the great success of her performance last year with the Orchestra in Elgar’s Sea Pictures.”

Wagner’s Wesendonk-Lieder is a cycle of five songs which he composed whilst working on Tristam and Isolde and Die Walkure.

Beethoven’s 5th is probably his best known symphony but still holds surprises for players and audience.

The concert opens with the ever-popular Mozart’s Overture to the Magic Flute.

The performance takes place at St Mary’s Church in Saffron Walden at 7.30pm on October 23.

Tickets (at £9, £7 concessions and £2 children) are available from the Tourist Information Centre (01799 524002) or on the door.
