The final young support act to appear at the Blues & Rock Weekender is...Shaun Colwill.
Who is he?
Shaun picked up a guitar when he was 16 and hasn’t looked back since. The 18-year-old Thaxted singer-songwriter has played gigs up and down the country and cites Ed Sheeran as one of his inspirations.
Shaun: “I really like a mixture of soul and acoustic music, as well as Motown and modern pop.”
How many songs has he written to date?
Shaun: “I have 20 that are finished and about 100 ideas that are not complete yet and I’m halfway through them. I was working on an EP but felt like I was rushing it and didn’t want to have my first recorded music out there if it wasn’t giving people the best first impression. I’m now writing and writing to produce the best music I can.”
Will playing at Saturday’s gig be a new experience?
Shaun: “No. This summer I’ve been doing one or two gigs a week, from London to Peterborough and even Devon at one point. I want to be a recording artist so it’s important for me to play for people in the industry and build up these contacts along the way. I’ve played quite a few festivals, too.”
How did the music dream begin?
Shaun: “When I was younger all I wanted to do was to sing. My parents put me into a theatre company because they wanted to help me get better but didn’t know the best way to do it. I moved to Cyrpus when I was 13 and so gave that up, before picking up a guitar when I came back to the UK at the age of 16. I taught myself and it just went from there.”
Biggest achievement so far
Shaun: “I won a competition to support Mike Dignam who supported 5 Seconds of Summer on their sold out UK tour. It was pretty crazy. The gig was in July at the Borderline in London and the first time I’d played at a proper sold out gig like that. He has quite a large fan base.”
Looking ahead to this weekend
Shaun: “I can’t wait. I’m really happy to be playing because I don’t get to do a lot of local venues near where I live. It’s a great opportunity.”
