WITH autumn upon us, this weekend sees the return of the highly popular Apple Weekend at Audley End House and Gardens which will celebrate the great British fruit.

Visitors will be able to enjoy a variety of apple-themed activities, stalls and refreshments throughout the weekend (Saturday and Sunday).

There will be lots to see and do as families are invited to visit the thriving organic Kitchen Garden and pick up useful gardening tips from the resident gardeners on how to grow fruit trees and make their own compost.

Visitors are welcome to pop into the service wing and talk with Audley’s resident cook Mrs Crocombe and the kitchen girls about how to make the most of this year’s harvest. They will be holding cookery demonstrations and making dishes from fresh, raw ingredients for a variety of traditional apple dishes. Visitors can take away recipes to try at home and they will also be able to purchase organic, home-grown produce.

Youngsters can enjoy an apple-themed trail around the organic garden, as well as the exploits of Audley’s Victorian gardener, who will be running activities throughout the day.

For those who are interested in the different types of apples, a specialist from the East of England Apple and Orchard Project will be on hand to chat about the variety of apples on display, as well as identify any apple that visitors bring from their own garden or orchard. Why not see if your apple is a lost variety?

Visitors can also see The Essex Beekeepers and their demonstration hive as they discuss the highly important role of bees in the garden.

Two new horses - a Shire Horse and Suffolk Punch - will also be moving to the newly refurbished stables where talks and activities will be programmed all day for visitors of all ages.
